 C'EST MAGNIFIQUE

Whether to record live or in the studio has always been a tricky question for any bandleader. In the studio you can have as many bites at the cherry as you like, re-take after re-take, and that is a plus, but at the same time you are stuck with the inherently lifeless and clinical atmosphere and the lack of an audience. After a succession of three, albeit very successful studio releases, we felt it was time for a "live" one again and set about planning for a venue with good acoustics and with a responsive audience.

The occasion of the twenty fourth Lynton Jazz Festival presented the perfect opportunity. Held within the grandiose Victorian Town Hall, with its beautiful wooden panelled walls, the acoustics were ideal. Add to this the promise of a full house of dedicated festival goers, all ready to lend their support to the proceedings and you have a winning formula.

We, the Armada, were making our fourth appearance at the Festival, and were at ease right from the start, and were soon able to forget that the tape was rolling. The result is some relaxed and at times inspired playing, with some great solos and with a natural ambiance difficult to achieve in other circumstances. You can feel the good vibes from the audience.

The selection compiled here is a composite of two concerts held on the Saturday night and Sunday lunchtime. There exists, in reserve, sufficient additional tracks for a second release in due course.

This album is dedicated to the memory of our late drummer Ken Butler, who died quite unexpectedly of heart failure two days after this recording was made. It was to be his last performance. His good humour, good drumming and good company will always be remembered.
