" . . . I had a letter to this programme last week which resurrected an old bone of contention that I'd thought had been laid to rest many decades ago. The correspondent asked why I seemed to be in love with the saxaphone, which he proclaimed "has no place in a traditional group, only serving to muddy the ensemble".

Well sir, love doesn't come into it, it's a fact of jazz life that were I to cast out the instrument in all its variations from this programme, very little music, either contemporary or historical would be left; and incedentally quite a lot of authentic New Orleans music would go out with the bath water.

It's not a happy time for saxaphones - a few weeks ago we had some stirring traditional jazz from the trombone and saxaphone front line of George Cole's Hot Five, and now along comes this, marching roughshod over the corpse of the old argument."

Humphrey Lyttelton, introducing Bugle Boy March.
