A working jazz band is just like any other team of people in that there are always times when certain members of that team are not available. Holidays away, illness and family Commitments can sometimes rule someone out for a day, a week or a month and it is on such occasions that the band has to rely upon deps.

A pre-requisite for a dep musician is that he has to be capable of maintaining the standard of the band and must be compatible with the bands personnel both as a musician and as a person, after all good vibes make for good jazz. He will, of course, be quite different to the individual he is standing in for, if he is worth his salt, will have a musical voice all of his own.

In much the same way as a new chef will cook the same dish a different way so will a fresh musician present his own version of a familiar tune. Interestingly - jazz being what it is - the musical input from a new musician will prompt fresh responses from the regular musicians because of the way in which we habitually listen to one another as we play.

With all of this in mind I thought it would be worthwhile to produce a CD which features some of the bands favourite guests and that is why John Wurr (reeds), Graham Trevarton (cornet), Eddie Edwards (banjo), and Bill Sweet (drums) appear on this album.

What about the results? Well, I am pleased with them. To my ears the band, normally stylistically eclectic and all embracing has lurched towards the New Orleans end of the spectrum. I can only speak for myself but I know that I modified my own playing to suit - after all that is the name of the game - to play what fits!

And that reverb, - well it is quite deliberate. Recording Engineer Dave Baker and I experimented in trying to find a reverb effect that would make it sound like we were sat listening in the front row of Preservation Hall, all bare boards, wooden chairs and sparsity. We think we found it so now we are pleased to surrender our seats to you!
