Down By The Old Mill Stream

It has been in my mind for a couple of years now to make another mainstream recording. The last issue of this genre was 'A Flight Of Fancy' (Raymer Sound RSCD769) and the five years since its making have simply shot by. I think I must have been dragging my feet for the want of some inspiration to prod me into action.

Fate always plays its part and it was in September 2006 when, as a member of an all-star line-up at Lichfield (courtesy of Don Reynolds, promoter) I found myself on stage with the wonderfully gifted Julian Marc Stringle, a musician whom I had first heard and greatly admired when reviewing a Digby Fairweather CD for the 'Just Jazz' magazine.

Once having pencilled him into my dream line-up the rest was relatively straightforward - simply to invite the best instrumentalists known to me on piano, bass and drums to join the party.

Pianist Craig Milverton is a marvellously talented musician who, I am proud to say, served some time in The Roger Marks Quartet in his formative years before moving on to more exalted company.

Another member of that quartet was Gordon Clarke and it is true to say that I have yet to encounter a better drummer in all the forty years that I have been playing.

My musical liaisons with Clive Morton have been few and far between but a recent chance meeting with him at a Weston-super-Mare jazz week-end served to remind me that Clive is my favourite bass player - he is not the least bit flamboyant or showy, just right on the money all the time.

The listener will probably notice that the tunes all have a romantic connection; this is actually quite deliberate. In my project notes for the CD I have always referred to it as the 'love album', but that is another story. Suffice it to say that if you find the music sonorous, melodic, emotionally engaging or simply pleasant on the ear, then that will do nicely.
