Having re-formed the Armada in 1992 I have been extraordinarily lucky with the band's personnel, there have been so remarkably few changes to the line-up over the years.
The front line of John Shillito, Ken Rennison and I has remained unchanged for 10 years now and this brings with it great advantages. It allows the development of an extensive repertoire where 'head' arrangements become firmly committed to memory and where difficult or complex tunes can be honed over a period of time. Furthermore a strong musical familiarity and understanding develops between the individuals which verges on the telepathic. Anticipation, second guessing and pro-active prompting are ever present in the collective ensemble improvisations.
Correspondingly the new rhythm section of Terry Lidiard, Terry Turland and Eddie Edwards have already clocked up five years together and here again they have a cohesion and understanding that is second nature now; the tiniest glance or signal that they use to one another is sufficient to ensure that they act 'as one'.
The Band's current repertoire comprises over 300 tunes and, because most of these have featured on a steady stream of CD's, it has became increasingly difficult to record numbers that we have not previously issued. Even so, of the selection here present on Shipshape, only Mack The Knife (a trombone solo last time) and Marie (different arrangement) have appeared before. Most of the remainder have been added to our repertoire since the time of our last recording.
Indeed it is by this process of renewal that we are able to keep the music as fresh for ourselves as it is, hopefully for you.
