"Roger Marks' Armada Jazz Band is well established and popular in the West Country and travels further afield to perform at jazz venues at home and abroad. (The Armada Jazz Band has also been featured by Humphrey Lyttelton on his BBC Radio 2 programmes). Despite many changes in the personnel since 1992, Roger has striven to maintain a high standard of presentation and his choice of musicians has enabled his consistent 'sound' to be easily recognised. Roger's early influences span trombonists of various styles but his ability to stamp his own 'marque' immediately makes his trombone unique and therefore identifiable.

This, the latest CD, recorded live at the Half Moon, Paignton in January and March in 2004 keeps up the standard expected of this well knit, well rehearsed outfit.

The driving force of Terry Turland (back on bass following a five year absence), Eddie Edwards and Terry Lidiard is metronomic, presenting Roger, John Shillito and Ken Rennison with a flawless rhythm 'hitching rail' for the front line.

The title track 'Yellow Dog Blues' epitomises what is good in this genre of jazz, lasting 8+ minutes with excellent ensemble work, interspersed with superb solos. John Shillito, on trumpet is, if it is possible, leading better than ever and his vocals on 'Lonesome and Sorry', 'New Orleans' and 'Mama's Gone, Goodbye' are sung with just the melancholy required. Ken Rennison is as reliable as ever on soprano and alto.

This, for me, is the best Armada Jazz Band CD so far, recorded with separation channels so well defined that, with eyes closed, you could be there! Six musicians with empathy for each other, work the arrangements with ultimate ease.

Very highly recommended."
